"Continue Our Tradition of Excellence"
Preserve Critical Educational Programs

It is critical that even during these times of economic uncertainty that we hold true to the high educational standard we have set in the Guilderland Central School District. While reducing spending is necessary to make sure that taxpayers are not asked to carry a burden they can not handle, these cuts must come from wasteful spending and not from educational programs. Some would say that we must trim our educational programs but I believe it is only fair to the taxpayers, staff, and students of the Guilderland Central School District that we go through our budget line by line and cut waste and overhead. I believe that we can preserve and even enhance our educational programs if we take the time to reduce irresponsible spending. I do not want to see our community have to choose between quality education and a tax rate they can afford and I know we do not have to make that choice. Preserving critical educational programs that have long made our school district a beacon of educational excellence is a non-negotiable priority. We must provide teachers with what they need to teach, and students with what they need to learn. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Examine all expenses and prioritize these expenses based on how critical they are to both the educational process and to a safe and orderly school district;
- Look at all possible options for revenue that do not jeopardize the values of the Guilderland Central School District;
- Cut costs by reexamining administrative and supervisor positions as to protect our teachers and allow us to hire more qualified teachers as needed;
- Reexamine how and where we get our supplies for our school district;
- Take full advantage of all fundraising programs and promote them.

"Make All Feel Respected and Safe"
Create a Respectful and Safe Climate
Studies have demonstrated again and again that students perform better in learning environments that they feel both respected and safe in. We must make sure that fighting , racism, sexism, homophobia, and all forms of discrimination are a priority in the Guilderland Central School District. Discrimination impacts our staff and our students and creates an inexcusable distraction from the educational process. We must address these issues at all levels from elementary school to high school and also make sure that our teachers and other staff feel that they are respected and safe so that they can focus on educating our students. The Guilderland Central School District does much to fight discrimination but more still has to be done. The bottom line is simple, discrimination makes learning difficult to impossible and that is something I will not allow to happen in our community. As a certified National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) trainer and an active member in organizations that combat racism, sexism, homophobia, I know firsthand the sting of discrimination and how it can effectively be addressed. I will make sure that I do everything I can to make this a district in which all community members are welcomed with open arms and open minds.

"Keeping the Board Accountable"
Preserve and Promote Integrity
Over the previous summer thousands of individuals from communities near and far watched on the television, and read in the newspaper and on websites about how Guilderland Central School District elected officials simply stood up and left a room of 500 community members who had come to speak their peace about the unfair forced transfer of two beloved educators. The months that followed were full of embarrassing and undemocratic meetings, and horrible press coverage for our district. The community was divided and people’s summer, a time of relaxing before another busy school year was disrupted. I fought long and hard and I am still fighting to right the injustices that were done. Guilderland High School lost two of its most popular and most successful educators. The community was also insulted as Guilderland Board of Education President Richard Weisz directed the board to walk out of a meeting and on several occasions discuss the issues behind closes doors. The community and the democratic process everywhere was insulted when Guilderland Board of Education president Richard Weisz referred to the community as a “mob”. I will always fight to  make sure that our district’s elected officials are accountable to the community and govern in a democratic way. I can promise that I will never turn my back on this community and I will always be an advocate for the people. I will only have one interest and one boss and that will be the community.

"Students Deserve a Safe Place to Learn"
Make Bullying History
As I have promised to confront the issue of discrimination I also promise to confront bullying. Bullying comes in many forms and does not necessarily have to be based out of some form of discrimination. We must make education about the harmful impact of bullying and how it can be handled widely available to our district’s staff and also educate students. Victims of bullying often feel isolated and not part of the community and I believe that we can not be our best until every voice is valued and important in our school district. The Guilderland Central School District must create and implement policy relating to bullying that handled offenders seriously, provides victims with the support they need, and also educated our community on how they can do their part to prevent bullying. As a certified National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) trainer I have had years of experience in leading workshops in both elementary and high school as well as attend workshops in the middle school. I will use my knowledge as an NCBI trainer to help this district formulate a plan of action based on internationally recognized techniques. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Form a bullying prevention coordinating committee that includes teachers, students, administrators, counselors, nonteaching staff, and parents to help you explore the problem of bullying and ways to address it;
- Ensure that your school has all of the legally required policies and grievance procedures in place for bullying or harassment. Make these procedures known to parents, students, and staff members;
- Encourage teachers to hold class meetings during which students can talk about issues related to bullying and peer relations. Encourage teachers to integrate bullying prevention themes throughout;
the curriculum;
- Ensure that all staff members take immediate action when bullying is observed. All teachers and school staff must let students know that they care and will not allow anyone to be mistreated;
- Establish a confidential reporting system that allows students to report victimization and that records the details of bullying incidents;
-  Administer an anonymous student questionnaire to assess the nature, extent, and location of bullying problems; and;
- Hold a series of open meetings that focus on bullying and involve the community in the effort to end it.

"Small Class Sizes Equals Big Results"
Preserve Class Sizes
The evidence is overwhelming that reducing and maintain smaller class sizes is critical to a proper education. This evidence is particularly clear when it comes to educating eleemosynary aged children. Smaller class sizes allow our great teachers in Guilderland to have wider range of choices when it comes to their style of teaching and provide the one on one help that some students need. Smaller classes make sure that the atmosphere is quieter and more conducive to learning as studies have shown less disciplinary issues occurring in small sizes. Small class sizes also allow teachers to form crucial bonds with their students in order to help them with school work or with other issues should they arise. Small class sizes protects our educational standards as well as our staff and students. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Ensure that class sizes are at a minimum between 15 and 19 students;;
- Ensure that particular schools are targeted, if they are struggling with low-achievement rates;
- Ensure that there is an adequate supply of qualified teachers; and;
- Ensure that there is adequate classroom space.

"Safe and Orderly Learning Environment"
School Safety and Order
Public schools are among the safest place in our country for children to actually be, and the Guilderland Central School District is a very safe district. However, we must never get too comfortable as the safety of our staff and students, as well as an orderly process to our school days are vital to the educational process. Everyday we must strive to make the Guilderland Central School District the safest it can possible be because our teachers and our students deserve nothing but the best.  We can reduce the level of student misbehavior by improving the orderliness of  our classrooms. Working closely with teachers on students' behavior management skills in elementary school will have future benefits including a reduction in both the dropout rate and the incidence of crime in our community. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Adopt discipline code that is supported by the entire school community;
- Integrate prevention and intervention strategies;
- Implement research-based programs to modify student misbehavior;
- Establish alternative placements for disruptive and violent students; and;
- Pursue a commitment to high standards for safe buildings.

"Safe School Buses"
Improve School Bus Safety
Each year our public school buses travel millions of miles as they transport students to and from campuses, field trips and other activities. In the course of these travels, however, only a small number of children are ever involved in an accident. Based on a per-mile comparison, school buses are four times safer than passenger cars. Yet, even the smallest number of school bus accidents is unacceptable. The Guilderland Central School District must protect our most valuable resource, our students, by improving the safety on our school buses. Very few accidents occur because of errors of the bus driver but rather most occur because of other motorists. The Guilderland Central School District must take some key steps to protecting our staff and students on the school bus. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Prepare and distribute a standard form which students and their parents must sign at the start of the school year--that clearly outlines the rules and expectations for behavior on school buses. And have these rules included within the student discipline code;
- Consider equipping more school buses with cameras to record the activities of students on board;
- Provide drivers with training on discipline and good safety practices and incorporate bus safety training into school curriculums;
- Participate in National School Bus Safety Week activities every October; and;
- Support the passage of state laws that impose strict penalties for motorists who illegally pass school buses that are loading or unloading or who otherwise endanger students through unsafe driving and also should support passage of laws that require passengers on school buses to be seated at all times.

"Responsible Budget"
Create a Responsible Budget for the District
A responsible budget is key for upholding the values of the Guilderland Central School District and the school community while also not putting an unfair tax burden on the citizens of our community. I will also stand up for students, teachers, tax payers, and every member of our community and never stand idly by when a budget has unfair provisions that are detrimental to our community. I will always put what is in the best interest of education as well as the community first and be a true advocate for all parties. I believe a responsible budget is critical to a successful school district and I will always do everything I can to open the budget making process to the entire community. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Open the budget making process early beginning at the very beginning of each year and visit schools to speak with teachers, parents, students, and everyone possible in our district to create a budget in everyone’s best interest;
- Increase transparency by putting all meetings, etc. online in a timely fashion and encouraging public attendance at all meetings as well as increase opportunity for the communities input;
- Observe and research other school districts to create a wide range of knowledge about how school district’s conduct their budgets to find what works and what doesn’t;
- Make sure to not overspend during good times and then cut during bad times by creating a sustainable budget;
- Always keep the impact that the budget will have on the taxpayer and be sensitive to hard economic times;
- Extensively survey students and teachers to see what programs are working and which programs aren’t because the budget should always better education.

"Enable our Staff and Students to Make Healthy Choices"
Helping Staff and Student’s to Healthy Choices
Schools offer a unique and prime environment to educate both staff and students about good decision making. Through a combination of legislation and school boards acting of their own will there has been much done to encourage healthy choices however it is clear that education is the best policy to helping staff and students make healthy choices. The Guilderland Board of Education should revisit the “Wellness Policy” and hold open meetings to get input from the community as well as consult professionals to form the best police for the district. I believe emphasis should be added to helping people make healthy choices not making choices for them. I believe that we must have a balance of individual choice while also holding true to the values of the Guilderland Central School District. The Guilderland Board of Education should:

- Revisit the “Wellness Policy” and invite the community as well as professionals to give their input;
- Educate about healthy choices and enable everyone to make the best choices for them;
- Find ways to integrate healthy choice making throughout our district and make it easier to make good choices within our schools
- Look at other school district’s that have successful “Wellness Policies” to learn what works and what doesn’t.

"Increase Communication with Elected Officials"
Regularly Meet with Elected Officials to Guarantee Needed Funding for Student Success
Far too often are we at the whim of our elected officials to enable us to be effective advocates for our student’s success. I believe that the Guilderland Board of Education should hold regular meetings with our elected officials to create dialogue and help spin the wheels of change in the favor our students and our community. The Guilderland Board of Education should also find ways to bring together our elected officials with our students, administrators, teachers and other members of the school community to ensure that students are a priority at a local, state, and national level. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Arrange regular meetings with elected officials to lobby on behalf of our community and our students;
- Bring together elected officials and the residents of our school community to create healthy dialogue and change;
- Create and vote on official stances to take regarding actions our elected officials should and shouldn’t be taking in the best interest our students and our community.

"Communication and Transparency"
Increase Communication and Change How People Interact with the Board of Education
The Guilderland Board of Education needs to work to change how it communicates and interacts with the community to ensure that all interests and fairly represented and considered in every step of the decision making process. These changes are key to a fair, open, and effective Guilderland Board of Education. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Create bi-weekly television/PA addresses to all morning announcements;
- Quarterly print newsletter to go home in backpacks;
- Regularly updated blog;
- Visiting schools during the day to observe instruction first hand;
- Being more accessible with students (sports events, dances, etc);
- Being more accessible to administrators, parents, and staff;
- Making sure every constituency is represented in every step of the board decision making process;
- Creating a Precedent for an annual State of the Schools Report;
- Utilizing New Media to reach out to all corners of the county.

"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"
Create an Environmentally Friendly School District
To truly be in line with the values of the Guilderland Central School District and our community we be sure that we do as much as possible to have as little as possible of an impact on the environment. The Guilderland Board of Education should make affordable green initiatives a priority to ensure that we are doing our part to be a responsible school district. The Guilderland Board of Education must:

- Calibrating thermostats in schools for efficient use of energy;
- Using task lamps for teachers and indirect lighting for computer labs;
- Hand-dryers In schools;
- Regulation to leave lights off at night;
- Addressing the problem of Styrofoam/Polystyrene lunch trays;
- Utilizing Fluorescent Light Bulb;
- Using Solar PV Panels;
- Utilizing recycled paper;
- Working with federal, state, and local organizations to install new sources of energy;
- Working to create better recycling programs;
- Supporting the use of the Automated Energy Management Systems in schools;
- Working with the Energy Star Appliances;
- Shutting down computers at the same time;
- Using green designs for new  classrooms and schools.
